HCPC looking for next Council Apprentices as scheme enters fifth year

06 Rhag 2024

Christine Elliott

HCPC Chair of Council

I am thrilled that we have begun the search for our 2025 cohort of Council Apprentices, as the scheme enters its fifth year.

Any current HCPC registrant can apply for one of the two spots. We do not require any prior boardroom experience, but candidates should be motivated to take part in the decision-making process of the organisation’s highest-level body. Apprentices will take part in an induction and be supported throughout their time on the Council by a dedicated Council member mentor.

The Apprenticeship scheme, which we began in 2020, aims to provide an opportunity for registrants to gain boardroom experience and skills as a non-executive member. In return, our Apprentices enhance the quality of our discussions and decisions by broadening the diversity of opinion, backgrounds and expertise.

I am proud that the scheme was the first of its kind in the sector. Many of our previous apprentices have gone on to secure roles on other organisational boards in health and care. It is rewarding to witness the personal growth of the apprentices during their year with us, as well as their contributions to our debates and decisions.

Council Apprentices take part in all our Council meetings and related activity, as well getting involved in the work of our Committees. We have also set up an Apprentice Alumni network for members to share and learn from others.

Jordan McKenna, Operating Department Practitioner and HCPC Council Apprentice 2024, said:

“Being an HCPC Council Apprentice has changed my professional outlook and perspective hugely over the last 12 months. I have a greater appreciation and understanding of the role of the HCPC and the Council and their responsibility towards the safety of patients and service users.

The Council and my mentor have been incredibly friendly and supportive. My fear of asking a silly question or embarrassing myself were very quickly alleviated as everyone was so welcoming and friendly. I will be using the skills I have developed over the last 12 months to push forward in my career and look for further governance and non-executive roles.”

Geraldine Kinkead-Richards, Occupational Therapist and HCPC Council Apprentice 2024, said:

“The HCPC Council Apprentice scheme fostered a safe environment for me to build my confidence around contributing in meetings, and allowed me to gain valuable insight into the different operational elements of the HCPC in delivering patient safety.

My mentor has inspired me to broaden my horizons and look at other non-executive governance opportunities as an Occupational Therapist. Supportive conversations with other Council members and ELT about their unique journeys have also been moments I have greatly valued and appreciated.”

This is a very exciting opportunity which I hope many of you will take the time to apply for, and I look forward to getting to know our new Council Apprentices in the new year.
